In a sign that early general elections are imminent, governing coalition A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) officially launched its campaign committee yesterday at Congress Place, Sophia.

The press statement issued by APNU last evening said the committee, which was launched by President David Granger, who is Campaign Director, and it was attended by representatives of all the coalition partners.

The brief statement said President Granger expounded on six essential virtues that campaign managers of the coalition must possess and six vices they must refrain from.

It added that General Secretary of the Peoples’ National Congress Reform (PNCR) and Minister of Social Protection Amna Ally discussed the roles of the operational structure. The minister emphasised that the coalition can and will succeed in the upcoming national election, it added.

Another sign of preparations for polls is the recent launch of countrywide outreaches by government.

The Department of Public Information on Thursday reported Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo as saying that government officials have embarked upon numerous “fan out” exercises across the country to fully brief citizens on what is happening in Guyana.

It said such exercises are planned for Linden, Vreed-en-Hoop and Essequibo this weekend as well as in the Deep South Rupununi in the coming week.

The early polls are expected as a result of the December 21st passage of a no-confidence motion against government in the National Assembly as a result of the defection of APNU+AFC member Charandass Persaud. The validity of the motion has been challenged by the government, which lost its first legal campaign this week in the High Court. It has said it is prepared to challenge the motion all the way to the Caribbean Court of Justice.

The opposition PPP/C, which sponsored the motion, has been calling for the elections to be held within the three-month deadline set out by the constitution upon the successful passage of a no-confidence motion and it has already selected its presidential candidate in the person of former minister Irfaan Ali.
