A fire at Manchester, Corentyne, has left an elderly woman hospitalised and the home she shared with four others destroyed.

Donald Morgan, 69, told Sunday Stabroek that the fire started sometime around 8 pm on Friday in the kitchen of his house. He said that he had just retired to bed when he heard other relatives sounding an alarm. Upon investigating, he saw his wife, Ingrid Morgan, 65, hurrying to take off her clothing, which was on fire.

It is suspected that the fire was ignited by their gas stove and it quickly engulfed the entire two-storey house. According to Morgan, his wife was making tea when a large flame flared from the stove and caught on to her clothing.

The Rose Hall Fire Service, which arrived at the scene within minutes, was unable to save the house but managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby houses.

The woman was rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital but has since been transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where her condition is listed as stable.
