Stanleytown man remanded over attempted murder of reputed wife

Desmond Hamer, the licensed firearm holder who allegedly shot and injured his reputed wife during an attack on Sunday morning at Third Avenue, Beach Front, Bartica, was yesterday charged with attempted murder and remanded to prison.

It is alleged that on April 7, Hamer, 52, a miner of Stanleytown, Berbice, wounded businesswoman Ava Abrams, in an attempt to commit murder.

He appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

As a result, bail was refused and Hamer was remanded to prison until May 2.

Stabroek News had reported that Abrams, 49, of Lot 77 Third Avenue, Bartica, was attacked around 2am, after she was approached by Hamer while seated in her vehicle.

She sustained a single gunshot wound to her left hand and was admitted to the Bartica Hospital, where she has since undergone surgery to remove the bullet.

Investigations, the police had said, revealed that the injured woman was in her car preparing to leave when she was confronted by the suspect.

Upon his approach, Abrams recognised him and an argument ensued, during which Hamer allegedly drew his pistol and shot Abrams.

Persons present in the area rushed to Abrams’ aid and later transported her to the hospital for medical attention.

Hamer was apprehended and handed over to the police by public-spirited citizens after he attempted to flee the scene.
