A Port Kaituma farmer was on Thursday remanded to prison after he was accused of raping a nine-year old girl.

During an in-camera hearing in Georgetown, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the charge to 59-year-old Clarence Marques.

The charge alleges that during the month of March, 2018, at 4 Mile, Port Kaituma, Marques engaged in sexual penetration of the child. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

Police allege that the assault occurred after the girl’s mother sent her to the home of the accused to collect something. While there, police say, Marques gave the girl a cup of porridge and while it was cooling he took her to a fowl pen, where he allegedly sexually molested her.

Upon the girl’s return home, she was then beaten by her mother because she returned late. This caused the child to run away and return to Marques’ home. It is alleged that he later gave her a bed to sleep but during the night he raped her. Sometime later, after returning home, the child was questioned by her parents and then she revealed what happened to her.

Marques was remanded to prison and is due to return to court on April 25th.
