Middle Rd pensioner robbed at gunpoint while awaiting transport

A Middle Road, La Penitence pensioner was on Monday morning robbed of his cellphone and wallet at gunpoint, as he was awaiting transportation in the village.

The victim, Lennox Whyte Rutherford, 68, an employee of CJ Construction and of 151 Middle Road La Penitence, said he was attacked at around 8.30 am by three men.

Still visibly shaken from the ordeal, Rutherford explained that at the time, he was approximately 100 yards away from his home, awaiting transportation. He was en-route to meet with his employer.

“They rode up to me and demand that I gave them my wallet, cell phone and bag. My wallet had $5,000 and my phone is an Alcatel smart phone which I paid $14,000 for,” he recalled.

“One of them had a gun and he held it to my face and I froze. I didn’t put up a fight, I just took out my phone and wallet and give them. They collected my bag which had my medications…,” Rutherford related.

He stated that no one was on the road at the time of the robbery and by the time residents could respond, the men had escaped. The entire ordeal, the elder man said, occurred within three minutes.

“It was very traumatic because it is the first time in my life I got robbed and held at gunpoint, I am still shaken by this…” Rutherford stressed.

He explained that after the robbery, he made a report to the Ruimveldt Police Station and gave a statement but to his knowledge no arrests have been made.
