Eleven persons were arrested and one person charged and sentenced to two years in jail after a police operation in Berbice unearthed more than 11 kilogrammes of narcotics yesterday morning.

According to a police press release, the Guyana Police Force, with assistance from its Narcotics Branch, conducted a cordon and search operation in New Amsterdam between 4 am and 8:30 am where 11 persons, inclusive of two females were arrested in connection with several offences including the possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, discharging a loaded firearm and robbery under arms.

The police explained that two sets of narcotics weighing almost 11kgs and almost $250,000 in currency, which they suspect to be from the proceeds of sale of the narcotics, were found.

One of the female suspects, Valencia Carmichael, 37, of Heathburn Village, East Bank Berbice, was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking shortly after being arrested and appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years in jail.

The operation involved 83 ranks and was commanded by a Senior Superintendent.
