More than two weeks have passed since murder accused Shaheed Ally was brutally beaten while in custody at the Lusignan Prison and the police are yet to identify the perpetrator/s of the crime.
Contacted for an update on the matter yesterday, Commander of ‘C’ Division Calvin Brutus told Sunday Stabroek that the police are collaborating with the Guyana Prison Service for the investigation.
To date, Brutus said, several inmates were interviewed but investigators have not yet been able to obtain any substantial information.
Ally, 30, a resident of Albouystown, was beaten by fellow inmates while in custody at the Lusignan Prison, hours after he was taken to the facility. The incident took place around 10.58pm on April 2nd, in Holding Bay 1 of the prison.
Ally sustained a fractured skull during the attack. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was admitted to the male surgical ward.
He succumbed to his injuries around 8.50 pm on April 5th.
An autopsy later showed that Ally died as a result of a fractured skull and brain haemorrhaging.
A source close to the investigation had related to this newspaper that due to the extent of his injuries, Ally was unable to identify the perpetrator/s of the act.
The source added that the police have since reviewed footage, in an effort to identify the suspects.
The footage, this newspaper was told, shows a number of inmates entering the area where Ally was being kept prior to the incident. However, their identities are not clear and investigators will have to enhance the footage.
Ally and another man, Malcolm Collie, were jointly charged on April 2nd for the 2004 murder of Albouystown businesswoman Sumintra Dinool, 65, whose body was discovered by one of her sons in their home at the junction of Sussex and Barr streets.
