An Essequibo businessman was left counting millions of dollars in losses on Easter afternoon, after a fire of unknown origin decimated a Spring Garden, Essequibo Coast sawmill.

The sawmill was owned by Roopan Ramator, called ‘Fowl cock,’ 55, of Land of Plenty, Essequibo.

The fire started around 5.30 pm on Monday.

Stabroek News was told that a 22-year-old labourer was on his way home when he noticed fire coming from the sawmill. As a result, he immediately raised an alarm. Persons in the area formed a bucket brigade in an effort to put out the fire, however, it was uncontrollable.

The Guyana Fire Service was summoned but by the time it arrived at the scene, the sawmill was already destroyed.

A fire service official yesterday told Stabroek News that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
