For this year’s Mother and Daughter Pageant, Supa Stylistics Promotions will for the first time host a live Red Carpet pre-show that present attendees with the opportunity of also being in the spotlight.

During a press conference at Regium Inter-national in Georgetown, Supa Stylistics’ Ingrid Fung and Sulan Fung-Browne announced that the New Nigel’s Supermarket and MovieTowne will be joining the list of companies supporting and sponsoring the annual event, which is scheduled to be held on May 11th at the National Cultural Centre (NCC).

The pageant has three categories: the junior category, sponsored by Always; the middle category, sponsored by Igloo; and the senior category, which will be sponsored by the New Nigel’s Super-market.

“Patrons dress to death for the show,” Fung-Browne explained, before adding and they “want to put the spotlight on them for a change.”

The Red Carpet Show, sponsored by MovieTowne and hosted by Gordon Mosley and Feliz Robertson, is scheduled to begin at 6pm and will be aired on live television. The pageant will begin at 8 pm.

The theme for this year’s pageant is ‘Super-power of Love.’ Fung-Browne explained that she noticed that most persons have a love for superheroes. “This year I want to talk to the people in the language they know and even though everybody [has] their own strengths, love is the best strength everybody has so the superpower of love is definitely the theme that we want to celebrate this year,” she said.

Prizes include trips around and outside the country, hampers, trophies and the usual crown and sash.

The names of the 22 pairs of contestants, who, according to Fung-Browne are working very hard to get ready for the event, will be announced during the course of this week.

Tickets are currently available at the NCC and from promoters of the event. Ticket prices are $3,500, $3,000 and $2,500, for auditorium front, rear and balcony seats, respectively.

In addition to that, patrons who purchase tickets from the New Nigel’s Supermarket will get a chance to win a grand prize on the night of the pageant.

Fung-Browne also noted that although there will be two sets of entertainment at the NCC, persons will only need to buy one ticket to attend both events.

Kendra Messiah, a representative of New Nigel’s, noted what an honour it was to be part of the event and that the supermarket just wanted to show the country their appreciation for mothers. She then mentioned that the supermarket has a number of Mothers’ Day-related promotions. One of those promotions requires persons to write about their mother, stating why she is the best, in order to have an opportunity to win prizes, such as vouchers, hampers etc.

The representative of MovieTowne, Kirly Bacchus, said that the company is very proud and excited to be part of the pageant because this would be the first time Movie-Towne will be in Guyana for Mothers’ Day.

According to Fung-Browne, this will be 28th production of the pageant, which was founded by her mother, Ingrid Fung and a few others. (Laurel Sutherland)
