A 58-year-old man is feared drowned in the Demerara River after going to take a bath on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the police, Mohammed Al Rasheed, also known as Fat Head, a security guard of #11 Village, West Coast Berbice, was working at the Omai Wharf in Linden when he allegedly drowned.
The police explained that enquiries disclosed that Rasheed was employed by 45-year-old Dindial Sookram, a contractor of Plot B D’Edward, West Coast Berbice and was tasked with looking over heavy-duty machinery.
On the day in question, Rasheed, along with two other workers – 21-year-old Tony Sookram, a sailor, and 38-year-old Ramnarine Daljeet, a porter – were on the wharf when he left to go to take a bath in the Demerara River.
Enquiries disclosed that about two minutes after Rasheed left, Ramnarine saw him panting in the water and immediately shouted for Sookram, who the police said was identified as the better swimmer of the two.
Sookram quickly donned a life jacket and armed himself with a lifeguard ring before jumping into the water to attempt to rescue Rasheed. However, because of the strong current, he was unable to rescue Rasheed who disappeared under the water.
