Police probing death of porter who allegedly fell from lorry

The police in ‘G’ Division are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 20-year-old porter, who reportedly lost his life after he fell from a truck he was working on Monday evening along the Le Destin Public Road, East Bank Essequibo.

Dead is Leon Thorne, a resident of Lot 500 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown.

Stabroek New understands that around 8.30 pm on Monday, Thorne was in the tray of motor lorry GWW 7269, which was proceeding west along the southern carriageway of the road, when he fell and sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

Thorne was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the motor lorry, a 37-year-old resident of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, was arrested and is assisting the police with the investigation.

Thorne’s body is presently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
