A Guyanese fisherman is now missing and feared dead after he was allegedly cut loose by a fellow crew member while transferring fish from his boat to another in Suriname’s waters.

Missing is Shawn Sewchand, 23, originally of Lot 122 ‘G’, Nigg Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice. He has been residing in Paramaribo, Suriname, for the past four years. A police source in Suriname confirmed that the four other members of his crew have been detained for questioning.

According to his sister, Alisha Sewchand, 25, she was told that he left home last Thursday morning to go fishing, which was a norm for him. However, the woman noted, they began to worry after they were informed that the boat returned on Thursday afternoon without her brother. She was not sure what port he departed from or where the incident took place.

“We hear that he was tie to a rope and some boy chop the rope and when dem call for he they na got no answer from him,” she explained. “Dem seh that how dem been a distribute fish to another boat and he bin tie to a rope in the water moving the fish from he boat to the other one and the boy from he boat chop the rope and lef he in the water but when the next man on the boat go fuh save me brother the same boy lash he in he head and he get unconscious,” she further reported. Alisha also said the fisherman who is accused of cutting the rope had a previous issue with her brother. She explained that the accused and her brother had visited Nigg, where during an event the accused attempted to interfere with her relatives. As a result, her brother ended up “chucking him up.”

She suggested that last Thursday’s trip might have been the first time the two had worked together since then.

Alisha said her brother moved to Suriname to reside with another sister.

Sources in Suriname confirmed to this publication that authorities there are searching for the missing man.
