The police have been called in to investigate a suspected break-in at the office of Mayor of Georgetown Pandit Ubraj Narine.

Stabroek News understands that it is believed that the break-in occurred some two weeks ago.

Contacted by this newspaper last evening, Chief Constable Andrew Foo said, “The mayor claims that a file with some documents relating to the Local Government Commission was stolen from his office.”

Foo said that he only learnt of the incident last Friday and he immediately informed the police.

“On Friday, I would have learnt about it coming out from a meeting and, therefore, I would have called in the police right away to look at the matter,” he noted.

This newspaper understands that it is suspected that the perpetrator/s accessed Narine’s office through a window in the washroom area.

The matter was only reported to the police following Narine’s return from Trinidad. “…He said he did not take it seriously until the incident with his vehicle,” Foo said.

Last Tuesday afternoon, a vehicle PTT 8909, which is assigned to Narine, crashed into three cars along the Turkeyen Public Road, on the East Coast of Demerara.

Mitford Cambridge, 53, of Lot 11 Section ‘C’ Middle Walk, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, who was injured in the accident, succumbed hours after at a city hospital.
