Trinidad: Patient blacks out, crashes into hospital

(Trinidad Express) A MAN driving to the Couva hospital for medical help fell unconscious and crashed into the lobby before daybreak Friday.

Police said the man ‘blacked out’ behind the wheel of his vehicle and drove through the main entrance of the hospital.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m.

Hospital officials told police that the 56 year old driver, of Roystonia, Couva suffers from dementia and is an outpatient of the clinic.

Officers suspect that as the man fell unconscious while driving onto the hospital’s compound his foot slammed onto the accelerator.

No one in the hospital was hit.

But the vehicle destroyed doors, chairs and walls of the hospital and the vehicle came to a stop after it became lodged between the walls of a corridor in the lobby area.

The driver suffered minor injuries and received medical treatment.
