Dear Editor,
The decision by the Speaker of the National Assembly not to revisit the No-Confidence Motion was widely anticipated and accords fully with the thinking of legal minds, both in Guyana and abroad.
The Government, through the Attorney General has now moved to the Court to prolong its life beyond that stipulated by the Constitution. This is a retrograde step from the perspective of parliamentary democracy.
One can only hope that the Court action initiated by the Government will not result in any undue delay in the holding of elections within the time limit as dictated by the Constitution. This, if allowed to happen, will be an aberration of a fundamental principle of the rule of constitutional law.
Our democracy is on trial. Now that the legislative branch of Government has spoken, it is for the Judiciary to have a final say, and the sooner the better.
