There has never been a more ‘ripe’ time for these two political parties to band together

Dear Editor,

A few months back I wrote a piece in the newspaper calling on the PPP/C and the APNU+AFC to join together and save this country. Our history teaches us that the PPP and PNC were birthed from the same womb and this by itself is evidence that the ideologies, vision and goals of both parties are similar. Both leaders, Cheddi B. Jagan and Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham were colleagues fighting for a common cause during the 1950’s.

I believe that there has never been a better time, a more ‘ripe’ time for these two political parties to band together and make Guyana a great country. With these political parties working together, the minds and the hearts of the people who hold old pains, old hurt, old baggage will heal as they will feel this spirit of national reconciliation and rebirth.

I am an advocate for accountability so I petition the presence of a strong opposition party even with a National Patriotic Front Government in place. This will allow for checks and balances and an efficient functioning of the governance structure. Our approaching oil wealth is the opportunity we have waited on for decades; I believe Guyana has been given this chance to move forward and build on its experience and knowledge. An important pillar of which is shared governance by the major political parties.

This unity of Government between the APNU+AFC and the PPP/C will create a subliminal, subconscious structure that will not only be good for defence but it will inspire investors to spend their revenue premised on our long-term stability and development in the various sectors: infrastructure, telecommunications, business, tourism, finance etc.

The eyes of our neighbour Venezuela is on us, they look to see the reactions of our leaders and our political stability, the eyes and ears of investors are glued as they await the verdict of our No Confidence Motion court case. Guyanese, the true custodians of this great nation are currently anticipating and predicting the actions of its leaders but still, all stakeholders hope and pray for good sense to prevail.

This call is not baseless. President David Granger in his 2019 New Year’s Message spoke words to this effect…calling for all Guyanese to unite for the sake of nation building. Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo as well is on record appealing to Guyanese to work for the good of our country. At the genesis of the Coalition Government’s ascension into office in 2015, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo made an inspiring statement: “We can do this Guyana, we can do it”. I appeal to our political leaders to remember these statements and calls for unity and love.

Government, Opposition, fellow Guyanese, we can save our country. We can build this dream that our fore parents struggled and fought for; we can accomplish what they never thought possible. It is at our fingertips. I urge you political parties to unite and fight for the good of all Guyanese. Heal past wounds and build on our foundation.

I would like to advise you Mr. President and Dr. Jagdeo to speak on what you have planned, but also to discuss peace and unity in Guyana, to discuss how your political parties can influence the mood and atmosphere in our land.

This meeting is of extreme importance and what derives from it will indicate to all Guyanese what the hearts of our leaders are filled with. This is an opportunity to begin the journey to national reconciliation and the rebirth of Guyana.

Yours faithfully,

Roshan Khan Snr.
