Disregard of no-confidence motion should be learning experience on our way to Nationhood

Dear Editor,

As I join my fellow Guyanese citizens in marking Republic Day 2019, I cannot avoid pangs of regret that our President and Prime Minister did not persevere in their initial response to the No-Confidence Motion (NCM), to abide by it, honouring our constitution.

Seemingly, growing fearful of putting their performance to the judgement of each citizen fifteen  months earlier than would have been otherwise, they reversed themselves, turned around and to this day, they will not accept being duty bound to hold Elections within 90 days.

My regret is tempered only by my recall of teachings that the path of mankind’s wondrous advance is marked and bounded by the turning to and opening of many doors, which if not closed soon enough, will be calamitous. That is my hope this Republic Day 2019, that this disregard of the NCM would be a learning experience on our way to Nationhood, a vaccination against a reoccurrence in the lifetime of Guyanese alive today. If it were to help us learn once more, not to be seduced by the seemingly easy, often unlawful path and avoid the honourable path that appears to be more challenging and demanding of us, then we would find our prospects of oil more rewarding.

Yours faithfully,

Samuel Hinds

Former President and Prime Minister
