City, tourism authorities in discussions on enhancing Georgetown

Dear Editor,

On Tuesday March 19, 2019, the  Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority Mr. Brian Mullis and Director General of the Tourism Authority  Mr. Donald Sinclair met with Georgetown City Councillors. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the proposed project that would enhance City spaces and to highlight the importance of a Tourism committee in the City of Georgetown.

Mr.  Mullis explained that the Caribbean Development Bank is making available funding for a project titled “Making spaces.” This project would be of immense benefit to the City and by extension the citizens.

The main purpose of this project is enhancing open spaces that are not properly utilized. Other benefits include: reducing congestion through improved pedestrian and cycle mobility, better utilization of   public parks, improved solid waste management and increasing investment opportunities.

The Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority added that the programme will bring together all stakeholders so that sense of ownership will filter down to the ordinary citizens. Director Mullis explained that stakeholder involvement is necessary for the sustainability of this project.

Director General Mr Sinclair in his presentation noted that the Ministry of Tourism has set up a number of Tourism committees in the various regions in Guyana. He noted that two committees were set up in Region Four; one on the East Coast and East Bank. Mr.  Sinclair explained that there is need for a committee to be set up in Georgetown. The main purpose of these committees is to promote tourism in the respective region where they are located. Members of that Committee should include; representatives from Tourism   bodies, municipalities, chambers of commerce, the National Trust and the Guyana Police Force.

Yours faithfully,
