Aberdeen – Georgetown twinning event in London

Dear Editor,

Aberdeen’s Lord Provost Barney Crockett was in London on Thursday night, continuing the twinning process of the two oil cities – Aberdeen, Scotland and Georgetown, Guyana.

A glittering reception was held by High Commissioner Hamley Case at his mission in Notting Hill Gate – directly opposite Kensington Palace. To seal the British end of the deal, High Commissioner Case pointed out the opportunities opening up in the new ‘Oil Dorado’- Guyana has already declared 5.5 billion barrels of oil found offshore with that total likely to double in five years. First oil is expected to be brought up by ExxonMobil later this year or early next year.

British High Commissioner Greg Quinn – beamed in by Skype from Guyana – also struck a positive note so long as transparency was the watchword and corruption driven out from the off.

Lord Provost Crockett, who recently returned from a twinning visit to Georgetown, announced himself ‘delighted’ to be part of the event and looked forward to a bright future for the twin cities and the twin countries.

A final speech for unity and the future in his homeland was made by Guyanese and West Indian cricket legend Clive Lloyd CBE, who closed the proceedings. The formal session was followed by consumption of much whisky and rum plus some haggis and roti.

Yours faithfully,

John ‘Bill Cotton/Reform’ Mair
