KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Left-hander Assad Fudadin struck a half-century and Chadwick Walton added another but Jamaica Scorpions still faltered on Friday’s opening day of their day/night third round match against Windward Islands Volcanoes.
Choosing to bat first at Sabina Park, the hosts were 148 for four but collapsed to 210 all out, losing their last six wickets for 62 runs.
Fudadin, who played three Tests six years ago, top-scored with 81 while Walton chipped in with 52. West Indies batsman Rovman Powell (22) and opener John Campbell (21) got starts but failed to carry on.
Left-arm spinner Kavem Hodge did most of the damage with four for 40 while pacer Josh Thomas, in his second first class match, finished with two for 42.
In reply, Volcanoes lost usually prolific opener Devon Smith cheaply for five, to end on 34 for one, still 176 runs adrift heading into Saturday’s day two.
Scorpions were stunned up front after Thomas knocked over key batsmen John Campbell (9) Jermaine Blackwood (0) in successive deliveries in the morning’s sixth over.
The left-handed Campbell was taken at the wicket and Test batsman Blackwood perished lbw.
Fudadin and Walton then rescued the innings in a 66-run, third wicket stand as Scorpions managed to keep Volcanoes wicket-less for the remainder of the session.
Guyanese Fudadin faced 231 balls and counted four fours and three sixes while Walton lasted eight fours and a six in an up tempo 87-ball innings.
Walton and captain Paul Palmer (5) fell in quick succession in the second session before Fudadin and Powell put on 37 to stem the flow of wickets.
However, once Powell departed after lashing two sixes off 35 balls, the innings slowly lost impetus before Fudadin was last out after shepherding the tail.
