Usual suspects capture Trophy Stall doubles titles

The usual frontrunners emerged champions of the respective divisions of the Guyana Tennis Association’s ninth, Trophy Stall doubles tournament which ended last weekend at the Le Ressouvenir Tennis Club courts, East Coast Demerara.

Top male seeds Anthony Downes and Leyland Leacock defeated Heimraj Resaul and Jordon Beaton 6-2, 6-3 in the men’s double final.

Earlier, the champions defeated Phillip Squires and Joseph DeJonge in the semifinals while the runners up advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Joshua Kalekyezi and Viraj Sharma.

In the ladies final, Cristy Campbell and the multi-talented Afruica Gentle battled Shelly Daly and Fiona Bushell in a keenly contested final before  eventually winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Daly then partnered with Squires to beat Benjamin Osbourne and Gentle in the mixed doubles final.

They dropped the first set 2-6 but bounced back to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-3.

Daly and Squires had defeated Khalid Gobin and Donna Walcott in the semi-finals 6-1, 6-2 while Gentle and Osbourne got past De Jonge and Bushell 6-3, 6-2.

In the men’s over-35 doubles, Leacock and Ronald Murry ran out champions in the round-robin competition while Raphael Nunes and Steve David-Longe finished as the runners-up.
