Defending champs reach quarterfinals

Three-time defending champion Showstoppers, ESPN and Bagotstown Warriors secured their quarterfinal berths, following hard-fought wins on Friday in the 5th edition of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ West Demerara/East Bank Demerara zone.

 Witnessed by a mammoth crowd at the Pouderoyen Tarmac, Showstoppers needled Up-Top-Bosses by a 1-0 score line. Dexroy Adams settled the outcome with a 15th minute conversion.

 Identically, last year’s losing finalist ESPN, squeaked past Brothers United. Trevon Lythcott found the back of the net in the fifth minute. Likewise, Bagotstown Warriors downed Ballers Empire 2-1 on penalty kicks, after regulation time ended scoreless.

 In other results, Jetty downed West Side Ballers 1-0 on penalty kicks, after normal time ended 2-2.

 Fenton Ramlakhan recorded a ‘Guinness Goal’ [GG] [any goal scored in the final three minutes of regulation time and extra time, will be counted as two goals] in the 19thminute to level the score for Jetty, after Devon Baptiste and Kevin Frank scored in the third and 13th minute apiece.

 Meanwhile, Rising Stars crushed Phoenix Ballers 3-0. Keanu Lawrence netted in the 15thminute, before tallying a [GG] in the 18th minute. Also, Young Ballers bested Agricola 2-1.

 Shawn Downer recorded a [GG] in the 18th to seal the victory, after Desmond Cottam had given Agricola the lead in the fourth minute. Below features the complete list of results.

 The event resumes on February 1st at the same venue with the final round of group matches. The event, which is the first zone of the annual season, features 16 teams battling in an initial round-robin format.

 The top two finishers from each group will advance to the quarterfinal round. Winner of the event will collect $500,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up will receive $250,000 and the corresponding accolade.

 On the other hand, the third and fourth place teams will pocket $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and a trophy. The other playing dates are February 6th, 8th, with the final pencilled for the 15th.
