WDCA President’s Cup final set for Joe Vieira today

The highly-anticipated West Demerara Cricket Association’s 50-overs President’s Cup final is set to get underway today at the Joe Vieira Park, Schoonard with Mc Gill Super Stars taking on Independence A. The tournament, despite having been delayed by rain over the last few months, has seen keen competition from the 20 teams that started the tournament with the top two being decided last weekend.

In the semifinals, McGill defeated Cornelia Ida Cricket Club in a rain-hit match with Azar Deen taking 2-43 and Prahalad Singh scoring an unbeaten 70.

McGill has played as a team with almost all their players chipping in at some point. Leading the batting is Singh with 170 runs so far from six matches while Travis Persaud and Abdool Razack has scored 125 and 115 runs respectively.

With the ball, Razack has been deadly with his off-break, taking 15 wickets with support from Travis Persaud with eight wickets and left arm seamer, Daniel Basdeo with nine. Their skipper, Sudesh Persaud, along with Shafiek Deen, Troy Persaud and Balram Aron will be a lot to handle come today.

Independence A has been in top form and like McGill have lost one match in the preliminary stages and marched into the final with a victory over Zeeburg at the same venue set to host the final.

Vivian Beckles continued his impressive form with a six-filled half century while their bowling has been shared between Yutesh Dhanpaul, Mahendra Dhanpaul, Jagnarine Etwaroo and Arshad Azim.   Admission is free and action is set for a 09:00hrs start.
