Brothers United ends Showstoppers reign

Brothers United ended the three year reign of Showstoppers in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ West Demerara/East Bank Demerara Championship, defeating the home side 1-0 on penalty kicks on Friday in the finale at the Pouderoyen Tarmac.

In front of a mammoth partisan crowd, the Crane based outfit led by star acquisition Andrew Murray Jr, clinched the coveted championship in a scrappy affair highlighted by very few opportunities. A defensive masterclass emphasized the effort of Brothers United, who negated the offensive threat of event’s leading strike-force, which featured players such as Trayon Bobb, Marvin Josiah, Dexroy Adams and Stephon Jupiter. With penalty kicks required to decide the outcome after regulation and extra time ended scoreless, Showstoppers sealed their own defeat as both Dexroy Adams and Marvin Josiah failed to score from the distance.

Brothers’ United handed Showstoppers hope of a possible comeback, as Adami Hoyte missed their first attempt from the mark. However, the title would safely end up in the possession of the Crane community as Murray Jr clinically converted, sending their sizable fan-base into a frenzy.

With the result, Brothers United copped $500,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up received $250,000 and the corresponding accolade.

Meanwhile, Ballers Empire dismantled Up-Top-Bosses 3-0 in the third place playoff. Collin McCalmon recorded a ‘Guinness Goal’ [GG] [any goal scored in the final three minutes of regulation time and extra time, will be counted as two goals] in the 28th minute. He was assisted by a Quincy DosSantos strike in the seventh minute. Due to the outcome, Ballers Empire copped $200,000 and a trophy, with Up-Top-Bosses walking away with $100,000 and the respective accolade.

In the Plate Final, West Side Ballers upset ESPN 2-1 to walk-away with $60,000. Dwayne St. Kitts scored a [GG] in the 28th minute. For the loser, Tefon Daly netted in the eighth minute.

The tournament was also sponsored by Colours Boutique, supplier of the team uniforms. The Berbice zone of the championship is slated to commence on March 8th. Brothers United captain Gadi Hoyte collects the championship trophy and prize monies from Guinness Brand Executive Lee Baptiste after dethroning three time champion and five time finalist Showstoppers in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ West Demerara/East Bank Demerara championships.
