Defending champion Michael Alphonso will battle Nicholas Verwey in the category ‘A’ final of this year’s Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Annual Bounty Farm Handicap Tournament after both young men completed semi-final wins last evening at the Georgetown Club Squash Court.

Verwey, in his semifinal encounter, hustled his way past Abosaide Cadogan 2-1 in a combative exchange. Verwey (-4) looked in total control in the first set to claim it 15-11 before Cadogan sprung her way back into contention by clinching the second set by a similar score line.

The third and decisive set, however, went to Verwey who fought his way back from being 0-6 down to claim it 15-12 and book his finals spot. He will face defending champion Michael Alphonso who defeated Kirsten Gomes 2-0 in the other semi.

Alphonso, who began the match with a negative six handicap, took it 15-7, 15-10 and will face strong opposition from the rising Verwey.

The Open title, on the other hand, will be decided between top seed Alex Arjoon and Regan Pollard.

Arjoon (-12) wore down Steven Xavier and defeated him 15- (7), 15- (4) in the first semi-final which was full of long rallies and precise execution by the eventual winner while Reagan Pollard (-4) sunk Deje Dias 15-14, 8-15, 15-9 in the other semi to set up a match with Arjoon in the final.
