Warrican flattens Volcanoes as Pride hold advantage

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, CMC – Test left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican snatched his second eight-wicket haul in only his third match of the season to give Barbados Pride the edge on the second day of their eighth round match against Windward Islands Volcanoes here yesterday.

The 26-year-old picked up eight for 45 to send the hosts tumbling for 138, and earn Pride a precious 77-run first innings lead at Arnos Vale Stadium.

In their second turn at the crease, Pride finished the day on 135 for six – a lead of 212 runs heading into the third day.

The visitors, however, needed opener Shayne Moseley’s 53 to keep their noses in front.

Resuming the day on 49 for two, Volcanoes failed to cope with Warrican’s guile and only teenaged opener Kimani Melius showed any resistance with 50.

When Melius was involved in a 51-run, third wicket stand with Test batsman Sunil Ambris (22), the hosts looked in a comfortable position but once Warrican went to work on the innings, Volcanoes lost their last eight wickets for 40 runs.

Melius faced 140 deliveries and struck seven fours.

Pride were in early trouble yet again after stumbling to 40 for three but Moseley and Jones combined in a 61-run fourth wicket partnership to repair the damage.

The left-handed Moseley stroked four fours in 104 balls at the crease but it was his dismissal which triggered another slide as Pride lost three more quick wickets for 10 runs.
