President of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson is optimistic that the athletes selected to represent Guyana at the CARIFTA Games will return with a treasure chest of precious metal.

“The team is a true reflection of the hard work that the coaches and the athletes have been putting in and I am confident that they can go out there and do us and themselves proud. I am confident in a large medal haul,” Hutson told Stabroek Sport yesterday.

Some 20 athletes, (three USA based) have been named to represent the Golden Arrowhead at the 48th staging of the CARIFTA Games in Grand Cayman scheduled for April 20-22 April.

Hutson added that he is “confident of this team bringing home hardware” since “everyone on this team has proven their worth.”

The AAG head disclosed that a high qualifying standard was set by the association for the athletes to reach during the three trial runs which culminated last weekend at the National Track and Field Centre.

“The team is made up of athletes that have proven their worth, it’s not a team of athletes that we think we like but who worked hard and achieved the stringent CARIFTA standards that we set. It is a team of great prospects that essentially picked themselves by earning their places on the team.”
