The opening day of the 2019 Caribbean Region Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) senior championship saw host Guyana recording striking performances to edge closer to capturing gold at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).

The men’s unit, coached by former Caribbean men’s singles champion and USA-based Sydney Christophe, playing out of group two, booked a place in the semis after recording a win and a loss; they were defeated by one of the pre tournament’s favourites, the Dominica Republic 3-0 while they rebounded to defeat St Lucia 3-1 to secure their place in the last six. It was unknown up to press time who they will face in the semis today.

The women’s team, coached by former Caribbean junior boys singles champion Idi Lewis, however, coming off a runners-up place in the just concluded Pan Am games qualifier, continued their spirited run and registered two opening wins in the women’s round robin final.

They defeated both Martinique and Barbados 3-0 on the opening day. Today, the local ladies will clash against Jamaica from 15:00 hours in a contest in which is expected to go their way to set up a virtual final against the ladies from the Dominica Republic who were also unbeaten last evening.

That tussle which is expected to be highly entertaining will serve off from 19:00hrs.
