Saints Hockey Club sweeps GHB, Smalta, Icool U-14 leagues

Saints Hockey Club (SHC) on Friday evening completed the double at the conclusion of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB), Smalta and Icool Water Under -14 indoor development league at the Marian Academy Auditorium.

The competition concluded in a stirring atmosphere where, Saints, playing under the SHC Scorpions title defeated St. Joseph’s High School (SJHS) Gladiators 7-6 on sudden death penalty shootout to lift the boys title. 

The match had ended 1-1 after regular time following conversions from Shamol Layne (SJHS) and Robert Marcus (SHC), respectively. 

Earlier in the evening, the eventual champs got by the defending champions Hikers Hockey Club Team UZZI 4-3 on penalty kicks after a 2-2 regular time draw while SJHS whipped SHC Supreme 9-1 on the back of triple hat tricks from Shaquan Richards, Shaquand Williams and Layne. Christopher Crawford netted the lone goal for Supreme. 

Supreme, despite the drubbing, returned later in the evening to defeat UZZI 2-1 on penalty kicks to take the third-place spot.

Meanwhile, the girl’s final was an all Saints affair, which ended in favour of SHC Snipers who defeated SHC Slayers 1-0.Shania Azeez’s 14-minute strike separated the two teams. 

Sniper, in the semis, defeated SJHS Divas 3-2 – the scorers for Snipers being Shanique Clarke – who scored a brace, while Azeee netted the other. Atecia Adams on the other hand, scored both goals for the Divas. 

Host and defending champs Marian Academy surrendered 3-6 to Slayers in the other semi-final where Clayza Bobb rattled the back of the net on five occasions for Slayers, while Haley Carpenter completed a hat trick for the host who also surrendered their third-place match 1-3 to Divas on penalty shootout.

 Taking away the individual awards were Kyra Scott (Slayers), who was adjudged the most promising female player while Bobb’s 11 goals earned her the most goals award. However, the MVP award went to Snipers’ Clarke.  

Daniel Woolford of Multi Rockets was adjudicated the most promising boy while Gladiators’ Layne was rewarded for his 21 goals and Javid Hussain of Supreme copped the MVP award.
