Winners Connection and Net-Rockers secured their berths to the semi-final round in the Linden Town Week Mayor’s Cup Football Championship, following quarterfinal wins on Sunday at the Mackenzie Sports Club [MSC] ground, Linden.
Winners Connection downed Silver Shattas 3-1. Winners Connection opened the scoring in the 10th minute compliments of a Rennard Caesar strike.
The aforesaid conversion emanated from a Cedrick Hunte cross, as Caesar directed a well-placed header into the back of the net from inside the penalty area.
The lead ballooned to 2-0 in the 39th minute as Shaquille Frank recorded his first of a double. Racing onto a through pass, Frank thumped his effort into the back of the net giving the goalkeeper no chance.
This lead would remain unchanged heading into the halftime interval. Upon the resumption, the lead grew once more as Frank secured his double in the 54th minute.
Marley Davidson was the facilitator of the conversion, threading a perfectly weighted pass to Frank, who finished his effort into the back of the net with aplomb.
Silver Shattas would eventually pull one back in the 62nd minute as Jehu Regis scored a consolation goal. Meanwhile, Net-Rockers edged Blueberry Hill by a 2-1 score.
The contest started brightly for Net-Rockers, who opened the scoring in the fourth minute through a Royston Fraser shot.
It would take Net-Rockers another 23 minutes to increase their advantage, Joel Isaacs etching his name on the scorer’s sheet, in the process handing his side an eventual 2-0 lead heading into the halftime interval.
However, Blueberry Hill reduced the deficit one minute upon resumption as Karon Noble slotted home following a goalkeeping fumble.
Nevertheless, the experienced Net-Rockers unit thwarted the remaining efforts of the Blueberry strike-force to secure the win. The event resumes tomorrow with the semi-final matches at the same venue.
In the opening matches, Winners Connection will lock horns with Net-Rockers from 19:00hrs while Eagles United will match skills with relative newcomer Capital FC at 21:00hrs.
