Guyana crush Leeward Islands by 96 runs

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Mavindra Dindyal extended his excellent form with 87 while Zachary Jodah got an unbeaten 68 as Guyana brushed aside Leeward Islands by 96 runs in the fourth round of the Regional Under-15 Super50 Cup here yesterday.

Batting first at the Liberta Sports Club, the Guyanese rallied to 264 for six off their 50 overs thanks to Dindyal who struck 13 fours and a six off 76 deliveries. Crucially, he put on 63 for the third with Anthony Khan (7) before adding 51 for the fourth with Jodah.

Once Dindyal departed, Jodah took charge of the innings, anchoring a 42-run fifth wicket partnership with wicketkeeper Jonathan Van Lange (10) and a 60-run, sixth wicket stand with Thaddeus Lovell (32).

Leewards’ run chase never got going despite Jewel Andrew’s 48 not out, and finished on 168 for eight off their 50 overs.

Trinidad and Tobago, meanwhile, put one hand on the Regional Under-15 Super50 Cup when they edged Windward Islands by six runs.

Sent in at the Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium, T&T were dismissed for a below-par 231 in the 48th over, with opener Kavir BoodooSingh top-scoring with 59.

He faced 102 balls and struck six fours, and put on 101 for the first wicket with Romario King who made 37. Once they were separated, however, the innings lost momentum and only wicketkeeper Verran Batchu, with 26 from 24 balls, showed any enterprise.

Windwards then got half-centuries from Divonie Joseph (68) and Mahid Lambert (50) but still came up short at 225 for nine off their 50 overs.

The pair put on 106 for the third wicket to pull their side around from 40 for two in the 13th over but then lost four wickets for four runs in the space of 12 balls to lose their way.

At Coolidge Cricket Ground, defending champions Barbados were handed their second defeat when they went down to Jamaica by 46 runs.

Opting for first knock, Jamaica piled up a more than competitive 289 for seven off their 50 overs, with Jordan Johnson hitting 93 off 100 deliveries and Steven Wedderburn chiming in with 71 off 73 balls.

Adrian Weir, who made 27, posted 55 with Marlon Williams (19) for the first wicket before Johnson and Wedderburn added 130 for the fourth wicket to further energise the innings.

Wedderburn, who struck a couple of fours and sixes, also anchored a 45-run sixth wicket stand with Michael Clarke (23).

Barbados, in reply, looked in great shape especially after Edwin Currency, who made 59, added 45 for the first wicket with Micaiah Simmons (11) and a further 82 for the second wicket with Joshua Morris (37).

However, from a position of 127 for one in the 28th over, Barbados lost wickets steadily as Reon Edwards (3-54) dented the innings.
