The 4th edition of the Corona Beer Futsal Championship was officially launched yesterday at the Top Brandz Distributors headquarters, Broad Street, Charlestown.

The eight-day event, which is coordinated by the Petra Organisation, will feature Georgetown Football Association [GFA] clubs facing off with community teams from May 4th at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

The other dates for the 24-team tournament are May 7th, 11th, 14th, 18th, and 25th with June 8th penciled for the final.

The GFA club teams that will feature in the tournament are Wolves United, Camptown, Black Pearl, Flamingo, GT Panthers, Pele, Mocha, Order & Discipline, Eastveldt, GFC and Black Pearl.

The community teams that will participate are Back Circle, Sparta Boss, West Front Road-Gold is Money, Leopold Street, California Square, Tucville, Kingston, North East La Penitence, Bent Street, Future Stars, Sophia Kingston, Broad Street and Tiger Bay.

The first two nights will feature elimination matches, with the remaining 12 teams being placed into three groups of four. The eventual top two finishers in each pool, alongside the best two third placed sides will advance to the quarterfinal round.

Troy Mendonca, Co-Director of the Petra Organisation said, “Over the years, we would have enjoyed a very good working relationship with the officials of Top Brandz Distributors obviously to be here for the fourth year.”

According to Mendonca, “There are a lot of players from clubs that went over to wards and there are a lot of clubs that want to participate under their structure and so we thought it a good idea or platform to see the ward teams play against what we call the structured clubs.”

He further revealed that players will be allowed to play for either clubs or wards, as there will be no restrictions on their participation.

Meanwhile, Corona Brand Manager Colin Stuart said that the company has always been supportive of sports locally and is pleased to continue their association with the tournament.

Winner of the event pockets $500,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third and fourth place finishers will collect $250,000, $125,000 and $75,000 each respectively and the corresponding trophy.

Similarly, $40,000 will be awarded to each group winner, while $30,000, $20,000 and $15,000 will be presented to the second, third and fourth place group finishers, respectively.

On the individual side, prizes will also be awarded to the event’s Most Valuable Player and spectators.
