First day abandoned without a ball being bowled

The first day of the final round clash between Berbice and Demerara in the Hand-In-Hand Inter-County Under-19 three-day tournament at the Lusignan Community Centre  ground was abandoned yesterday.

Upon inspection prior to the start of play, the pitch was in no condition to have a prompt start with advice from the groundsmen signaling a potential start at lunch.

However, with frequent showers, the covers came off twice and had to be rushed back on before the three umpires and match referee did a final inspection and called off the day’s play without a ball being bowled at 15:05hrs.

Currently, defending champions, Berbice leads the points table with 17 points with Demerara on 16.3 points. Theoretically, should this match be abandoned and points shared, if Select Under-17 who are on 10.4 points defeat Essequibo (0.2 points), the junior side can take the title.

Play starts at 09:30 hrs today but with rain in the forecast and the pitch still having moisture that early start seems unlikely.
