In an age where sports analytics is increasingly becoming one of the main pillars in the development of sport, the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) is working to use a similar model to advance the growth of cricket.

As such, the city’s administrative cricket body yesterday pollinated over 20 coaches and captains with fresh insights on player development and management during a session held at the Muslim Youth Organisation(MYO) ground.

The session was facilitated by President Roger Harper, Vice President Neil Barry, and Chairman of the Cricket Development Committee Mark Harper.

“This is our first cricket development session for the year; a coaches’ workshop where we are striving to improve areas like preparation, and giving an update of the new coaching drills and techniques that are available,” Chairman Harper explained to Stabroek Sport when asked about the different elements of the session.

Pointing out the importance of encouraging the deployment of the right technical habits at the grassroots level to foster cricketing acumen, Harper expressed the body’s desire to produce quality players who can stand the test of time at the highest level.

He stressed the value of health, fitness and strengthening.

“We also had young Neil Barry Jr. (Guyana Jaguars trainer) here also doing a session on fitness and we worked to cover a lot of other important areas the morning.”

The session, which began at 09:30hrs, saw representatives from almost all of the city sides. The GCA in a release had noted the timing of the session as being ideal since they are currently within the cricket season.
