Cadogan sneaks Spartans past defending champs GBTI Tigers in opener

Fifteen- year old Abosaide Cadogan netted a brace last evening to spur Bingo GCC Spartans past their senior counterparts and defending champions GBTI GCC Tigers in the opening match of the 2019 Guyana Hockey Board (GHB), Noble House Seafoods goals galore handicap open indoor hockey tournament at the National Gymnasium. 

Spartans took the match 7-6 which saw the defending champs Tigers beginning the handicap match with three goals, two fewer than Spartans. Marzan Fiedtkou gifted Tigers the lone first-half goal after she converted 13 minutes in. 

Tigers found another strike early in the second half compliments of Sandy Roopnarine which levelled the score on 5-5.

The intensity of the match then shifted as both teams began to hunt for goals but it was Spartan’s Abosaide Cadogan second-half brilliance which saw her sneaking two goals past the upright, two minutes apart, which furnished her side a 7-5 lead and the eventual win. 

Fiedtkou pulled one back late but it was not enough to prevent Spartan’s triumph. 

Meanwhile, defending male champs GCC Vintage began their title defence with a commanding 15-13 win over YMCA Old Fort Champs. 

Champs who had a 12-goal handicap only netted once through Daniel Woolford 38-minute strike and were left licking their wounds as journeyman Dwayne Scott netted six goals for the GCC side who began the

match with five goals. 

Also netting was Patrick Edghill, John Phang, Alan Fernandes, and Jason Gomes to complete the goal-scoring frenzy. 

GCC Spice, on the other hand, added early flavour to the competition by demolishing Old Fort Bellatrix 16-9. 

Old Fort who had a 9-0 advantage to begin the match failed to find the back of the net as Ashley De Groot licked her chops and netted five well-placed goals. 

Also joining in the fun were Macaela Harding who scored four goals and skipper Gabriella Xavier converted a hat trick.

Trisha and Dacia Woodroffe supported with a brace each. Those were the matches as of press time.
