Senior CASA: Guyana emerge overall champs 

as men, women’s teams cop gold

Host Guyana was crowned the 2019 overall champs in the Senior Caribbean Team Championships (CASA) yesterday at the Georgetown Club Squash Court.

The Guyanese, on their way to the title, captured gold in the women and men’s teams categories and silver in the veterans division. 

Nicolette Fernandes, the 2019 singles champ, was once again at the forefront of the women’s team title executing well against Meagan Best to win 11-8, 11-6, and 11-3. Larissa Wiltshire, though was the player to get the Guyanese off to a winning start, crafting a gutsy come-from-behind win over Jodi Smith-Padmore 6-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-7.

 Taylor Fernandes completed the triumph by downing Sumairaa Suleman 11-6, 11-5, 11-8. The other two matches were forfeited after Guyana secured the best of five triumph.

The local men were led by an inspirational first match win by Kristian Jeffrey who was willed on by the crowd and fought through the final-day battle bruises to overcome Jamaican Dane Schwier 11-1, 9-11, 6-11, 13-11, 11-6 to put the locals ahead. 

 Shomari Wiltshire and Richard Chin were unable to hold off Julian Morrison and Christopher Binnie, losing 1-3 and 0-3 respectively. 

 However, the Guyanese team prevailed on the back of purposeful performances from Jason-Ray Khalil and Nyron Joseph who accounted for Bruce Burrows and Tahjia Lumley both by 3-2 margins to hand Guyana gold in the men’s division. 

 The vets, on the other hand, went down to Barbados 2-3 in the final.
