Plant more trees

Over the Christmas holidays I had some very interesting conversations on our trees and environment. Reflecting on all that is going on around the world with climate change, the wanton destruction of our trees wreaking havoc.

Meanwhile in China, India, the United Kingdom and some countries in Africa there are massive tree-planting drives, ensuring that there is clean air and cutting their medical and environmental bills by millions of dollars.

Every man, woman and child are being educated on how important trees are and how to take care of them. For instance, the UK is planting one tree per citizen in Manchester as a pilot project.

What are we doing in Guyana? We, as a nation, are so laid back, not doing anything until something happens to affect us. No one is coming to plant our trees. The sooner we get going the better for all concerned. We have to plant and care for our trees and environment, instead of chopping them down to provide parking spaces. Citizens needs to start car pooling. It works successfully in other countries.

Trees purify the air we breath in and absorb carbon dioxide. Cars pollute the air. But look at the state of our trees. When last were they properly trimmed and sealed? We are losing them faster than we can plant them.

I implore everyone to plant more trees in 2019. Let us prepare ourselves for climate change and global warming. Generations to come will thank us.

Until next week, Happy Gardening.
