Whiteflies are rampant

During the past week, I have received many inquiries about white flies. Upon close inspection, plants were found be heavily infested. At least 2 plant sellers are passing infected plants to their customers. Once these infected plants are transported to customers’ gardens, the flies are easily spread to most of their plants.

White flies are small flying insects that feed on leaves of plants. White Flies can kill healthy plants as they dwell primarily on plant leaves and can also infect the soil and damage the plants by sucking the juices from the leaves and stems.

A heavy infestation of white flies is difficult to control. You would need to spray infested plants twice per week to control the situation.

When you are purchasing plants, you have the right to inspect them and if you notice any insect or pest, as a precaution, you should not make the purchase. This will help to keep your garden free from insects and pests.

As a safeguard you can also plant Basil and Marigold as companion plants to keep off insects and pests.

Until next week, Happy Gardening.
