About The Writers’ Room

The Writers’ Room is a new column featuring the work of Guyanese writers, both established and emerging. Pieces of short fiction and creative non-fiction, as well as extracts from published works will be accepted.

Background
For years, the Sunday Stabroek’s Weekend Magazine has published children’s short stories from around the world. While they have their appeal, many don’t represent the world that is more familiar to our readers. Recognising this, we considered reaching out to writers closer to home (the Caribbean region) and then contemplated the existence of a platform that features the work of Guyanese writers, both here and in the Diaspora. The hope is that these stories captivate our readers, particularly children and young adults, and encourage emerging writers and those with yet untapped potential to tell their stories.

The Process
The column will feature a different author every week. It is preferred that a range of pieces are submitted to determine which entry is the best fit for the column. Priority will be given to pieces already published or in the case of unpublished work, to those that require little to no editing. See our guidelines at: https://www.stabroeknews.com/2019/sunday/the-writers-room/07/14/the-writers-room-submission-guidelines/

Remuneration
The newspaper will pay writers a modest fee for being able to feature their work; however, this in no way relinquishes the author’s rights to their intellectual property. The Writers’ Room is only meant to provide a platform for visibility and to encourage more local writing.
