Ssignal Productions is commemorating the 181st anniversary of emancipation with its seventh annual jazz and soul concert at the Umana Yana on Sunday, August 4.
The Emancipation Jazz and Soul Concert will feature leading musicians, including the Quick Pick Band: Trevor John on keyboard, Peter Callender on bass, Herbie Marshall on guitar, Smith on drums and pan; Charmaine Blackman; The Circle of Love; Dawn Edwards; Bonny Alves; Devon Denny; Eze Rockcliffe; Compton ‘Magus’ Leacock and introducing Jolyon Harry who will be making his debut.
International trumpeter Rellon Brown of Trinidad and Tobago who was one of the featured guests last year will once again grace the stage. Brown is a highly versatile trumpet player, musical director, lecturer, arranger and composer. He is the founder and musical director of the band Dominant Seventh (2002) and received a Cacique Award for Most Outstanding Musical Direction for Eric Barry’s: “The Catalyst” in 2005. He has also produced stellar musical arrangements for Monkey Mountain Foundations’ 2015 production of Derek Walcott’s Ti Jean and His Brothers. With his group, Brown has produced a CD titled ‘HomeGrown’ (2016) which remains a highwater mark for indigenous music and an outstanding example of Calypso Jazz.
In September 2017, Dominant Seventh performed as a feature entertainment for the inaugural Jazz and Melodies event. It was also the resident band at Skyy View Lounge in San Fernando hosting the monthly performance series ‘Beyond Horizons’. 2018 saw Dominant Seventh making appearances at a sold-out concert at Kaiso Blues Café and at Fiesta Plaza in MovieTowne. Brown is currently working on his next recording project with the band.
