Minister of Foreign Affairs Karen Cummings on Thursday appointed Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer for Guyana Gregory Dean as Honorary Consul General of the Republic of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

A statement issued by the ministry yesterday stated that Cummings presented the Certificate of Exequatur to Dean, appointing him Honorary Consul General of the Republic of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.

According to the statement, after receiving the certificate, Dean expressed “keen interest” in enhancing relations between Guyana and the Netherlands. Dean and the minister then discussed cementing relations between the two countries, with a focus on areas such as business, tourism and capacity building, among others.

According to the statement, Guyana and the Netherlands established diplomatic relations on May 15th, 1970. Since then, the Netherlands has provided technical assistance to Guyana in several instances, including the 2005 flooding, during which Dutch expertise on dams aided in the development of a task force that made relevant recommendations to the government.
