Cottage cyclist killed in accident

A 57-year-old pedal cyclist died after he was reportedly struck by a minibus on Sunday evening along the Planters Hall Public Road, Mahaicony.

Dead is Terrence DeAguiar of Lot 2 Cottage, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.

Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan yesterday confirmed the accident which occurred around 6 pm. He said the driver, a 49-year-old resident of Eccles, East Bank Demerara is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.

The driver, Ramlakhan said was subjected to a breathalyzer test but no trace of alcohol was detected.

Investigations, the police said, revealed that minibus BXX 3501 was proceeding west along the southern side of the road, when the driver alleged that DeAguiar, who was proceeding in the said direction in front of him made a sudden turn in front the bus causing the minibus to hit him.

As a result of the impact, DeAguiar fell onto the road where he suffered injuries to his head.

He was picked up in an unconscious condition by the driver and taken to the Mahaicony Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigations are ongoing.
