Canal Number Two win last-ball thriller

Canal Number Two Sports Club, McGill Super Stars, Dynasty, Belle Vue, Independence A and B all secured victories in the latest round of matches in the West Demerara Cricket Association President’s T20 tournament.

On Monday at the Canal Number Two ground, a last-ball thriller saw the hosts reaching 159 for seven, in reply to Windsor Forest A’s 155 for seven.

The visitors won the toss and opted to bat under overcast conditions and Deoram Chanderbir piloted the innings with an impressive 87, which featured eight sixes and four fours. He was supported by Avinash Ganesh, who made 27, highlighted by five boundaries.

Narendra Persaud was the pick of Canal Number Two bowlers, picking up four for 25 from four overs with Seecharan Persaud chipping in with two for 21 from three overs.

In reply, Chabiraj Ramcharan aided the chase with a top score of 81, laced with four sixes and eight fours.

Taijnauth Jadunauth played an integral role with a 28-run cameo while Deendyal Guyadeen looked to halt proceedings with two for 15 from four overs.

On Sunday, McGill defeated hosts, Meten-Meer-Zorg by 39 runs. The visitors won the toss and took first strike, posting 119 for six from their allotted overs before containing Meten-Meer-Zorg to 81 for eight in their 20-over allotment.

The low-scoring affair saw Azar Deen leading the way with a top score of 25 while Keyshram Sehyhodan (15), Troy Persaud (14) and Travis Persaud (12) provided useful cameos.

However, it was a good bowling effort from the hosts that kept McGill at bay. Sheldon Alexander and Mahendra Nandkishore were the principal bowlers, taking three wickets each for 14 and 15 runs respectively.

While the target was relatively small, Abdul Razack bagged three for 25 while Daniel Basdeo took two for 12 and Travis Persaud picked up one for 12 to restrict the hosts. Jermaine Maxwell stroked five boundaries in his top score of 22 while Reaz Khan made 20, highlighted by three sixes.

At Belle Vue, the hosts handed Wales a six-wicket defeat after reaching 146 for four in 16.3 overs, replying to 141 for seven.

James Champayne top scored with 32 while Ryan Shan made 31 for Wales as Randy Ramrup picked up three for 14 and Krishan Singh took two for 23 for the hosts.

The chase was guided by Colin Boucher who made 35 and Anjula Bowman with 27. Young Dyal took two for 31 and Brian Puran snared one for 33.

At the same venue, Dynasty defeated Windsor Forest B.

Over at Joe Vieira Park Independence B beat Sawpit by four wickets. Sawpit won the toss and opted to bat, but were bowled out for 103 in 12.3 overs with Imran Khan top scoring with 34 and Kevin Ragnuath, 21. Harrichand Persaud (2-19) and Terry Narine (2-25) were the principal wicket takers for Independence B. Quazim Yussuf (39) and Aaron Sewpersaud (27) then steered their side over the line, despite Khan returning to take two for 28. Andy Joe also picked up two wickets.

Later in the day at the same ground, Independence A trounced New Windsor by 89 runs. Independence A won the toss and decided to bat, posting 151 all out in 19 overs, led by Safraz Esau who made 40 and Vivian Beckles with 32. Deo Deonarine picked up three for 32. The chase was stifled by Anand Bharat, who took six for four and Ricky Sargeant who had two for four as New Windsor were routed for 62 in 15 overs. Ramesh Thakur top scored with 30.
