All Masses will be cancelled in the Roman Catholic Diocese effective Sunday 22th March 2020 until further notice because of the threat posed by the coronavirus.

In a statement yesterday, Francis Alleyne, Bishop of Georgetown said: “All Catholics are strongly urged to participate in Mass which will be streamed through the Catholic Media Guyana FaceBook page.  In this way we can join in prayer, listen to the readings and reflection and participate spiritually in Eucharist.

“From our homes we can join in fervent prayer in the spirit of Lent seeking conversion and deeper Communion with our God and one another.  Keep in your prayer all the concerns surrounding the COVID-19; those infected, those who have died, health care providers, especially the poor who will first feel the economic fallout from the present situation”.

He noted that throughout the world and in Guyana the number of persons infected by the coronavirus  continues to increase.

“Also on the increase is our understanding of this virus; the rapidity with which it spreads and the effects on those who are exposed to it, especially the aged and infirm.  What therefore must increase are the precautions to be taken in order to arrest the spread of the virus”, the Bishop said.
