A 25-year-old East La Penitence man was on Friday shot by police ranks after he reportedly fired at a police patrol.

The incident occurred just around 2:15pm, when ranks who were on mobile patrol in the East La Penitence area spotted the male suspect who is wanted for questioning in relation to a number of armed robberies.

According to a Guyana Police Force press release, the suspect was in the company of others and when the police approached the men, the suspect whipped out a handgun and discharged several rounds in the direction of the police.  The release said that as a result the ranks adopted “tactical positions” with one rank returning fire, hitting the suspect in the right knee.

The suspect was subsequently disarmed of an unlicensed pistol along with fourteen live rounds while one of his accomplices was also apprehended. In a video seen by Stabroek News, the suspect could be seen lying on the roadway with a wound to his right knee. A number of persons who appeared to be residents of the area could be heard shouting at the police ranks who were attempting to lift the injured suspect into the police’s vehicle. It was further observed that one round was fired and the onlookers around retreated somewhat. The ranks were then able to place the suspect into the vehicle.

According to the police, the suspect is presently under guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital where his condition is regarded as stable.
