No new COVID-19 cases recorded for third straight day

For the third day in a row, the Public Health Ministry has reported no new cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Guyana.

The ministry yesterday said in its COVID-19 update that the number of confirmed positive cases in the country remained at 153 even as 14 more persons were tested, bringing the total number of persons tested to 1,672.

It added that there are currently 71 active cases in institutional isolation, with 25 persons in institutional quarantine. Two persons remain in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit while 70 persons have so far recovered from the virus.

The Public Health Ministry yesterday also highlighted the preparedness of the various regions and praised Region Six on how it has so far handled the outbreak.

According to Regional Health Officer Jevaughn Stephen, since the region recorded its first case, which also became its only death, no other cases were recorded. Stephen stated that this is the result of the health care workers on the frontlines working “Beyond the call of duty” to ensure the safety of the region. He added that they have implemented measures inclusive of screening at all health facilities in the region. He also pointed out that the Berbice River Bridge is the key screening point as it is the main entry point to the region, with about 1,700 to 2,500 persons entering the region on a daily basis, he said.

Stephen stated that the measures put in place in the region have so far been effective in curbing the spread of the virus in the region.
