The Public Health Ministry yesterday announced that 10 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed.

Guyana has now recorded a total of 245 cases.

The Ministry of Public Health’s COVID-19 dashboard yesterday indicated that the new cases were confirmed from the results of 26 more tests.

This represents a significant decrease from the previous day when the results of 129 tests were released. The total number of tests done so far stand at 2,578.

There are currently 119 active cases in the country and all are being treated within institutional isolation. There are currently 16 persons in institutional quarantine and one person in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit. The number of persons that have recovered remains at 114.

While the majority of cases are now in the hinterland region, Region Four had previously been described as the epicentre of the local outbreak as it had accounted for the most cases. Recently, throughout Georgetown, the country’s capital, the streets could be seen teeming with people, many of whom are not wearing masks. This represents a major shift in the public’s attitude when compared to April when the emergency health measures were first implemented and Guyana’s case count was significantly lower.
