Cycling officials on historic online course

While the nation’s cyclists are forced to sit out due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) and some of its officials are not resting on their laurels.

It was recently disclosed that three locals have historically embarked on the 2020 Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Commissaires Course.

The course is being conducted online through the auspices of COPACI.

It will be the first time that Guyanese will be participating in this course and those selected were Malcolm Sonaram (Carlton Wheelers Cycling Club and Racing Secretary of the GCF), Andrew Arjoon (Team Evolution) and Jeffrey Yearwood (Linden Bauxhall Flyers).

In competitive cycling, a commissaire is an official approximately equivalent to an umpire or referee in other sports. … The governing body of cycling, UCI appoints the chief commissaires for international events on its calendar and the whole commissaires’ panel for the most major events.

The course commenced on July 2 and will be completed on August 28.

On completion of the course, there will be an examination and once certified the participants will become UCI accredited Commissaires.  Said Sonaram on Sunday “It is a great opportunity for us and a great initiative for the GCF to select persons for this auspicious position. It will greatly assist us in cycling in Guyana and at Regional and International events as well.”
