UN Resident Coordinator condemns `despicable’ arson attack on human rights centre

UN Resident Coordinator Mikiko Tanaka yesterday condemned Sunday’s arson attack on the Guyana Human Rights Centre.

In a tweet, she said “The arson attack on the Guyana Human Rights Association is not only a crime but is a despicable attack on human rights in Guyana. Thanks to the citizens who put the fire out.”

And continuing to keep an eye on the elections situation here, Tanaka today emphatically urged an end to the ongoing crisis. Noting the launch of a youth advisory group on climate change by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Tanaka tweeted: Many young people in #Guyana are passionately engaged in #ClimateAction. They need political space to be heard and to contribute to the betterment of the environment and society. An end to the political crisis is urgent!
