(Jamaica Gleaner) A brave motorist foiled a brazen attempt by gunmen travelling on a motorcycle to rob him in Negril, Westmoreland, on Wednesday afternoon when he forced them off the road, resulting in them crashing into a wall at a popular hotel.

The attackers were subsequently captured and an illegal firearm seized.

While the police are yet to release the identities of the men, The Gleaner has learnt that one of the men is a Clarendon resident while the other is from Red Ground, on the outskirts of Negril.

According to reports, shortly after 12:30 p.m., the driver of a Toyota Crown motor car was driving along the West End main road in Negril when the two men on the bike pulled up alongside the car. The pillion rider brandished a handgun.

The motorist defied their orders to pull over and swung the car into the path of the speeding bike, sending it careening into the wall of Rondell Village Resort.

Residents assisted the police in capturing one of the men who tried to escape. The other attacker suffered injuries and was rushed to hospital and placed under police guard.

The motorcycle and a fully loaded 9mm pistol were seized.

Superintendent Robert Gordon, commanding officer for the Westmoreland Police Division, praised the swift action of the police and the intended robbery victims.

Bike robbers have come under greater scrutiny in Jamaica in recent years because of increased anecdotal reports.
